Non-Award Study
What is non-award study?
Non-award study involves enrolling in one or more units without being enrolled in a degree or diploma.
If you subsequently enrol in a relevant degree, the credit points you gained from non-award study may be counted towards that degree provided they have not already been included as part of another degree.
What actuarial units are available?
All 1st, 2nd and 3rd year undergraduate units offered by the actuarial department are available on a non-award basis. Some postgraduate units are also available on a non-award basis.
The most common scenarios for non-award enrolment in actuarial units are the following.
- The unit ACST101 "Techniques and Elements of Finance" is a general introductory unit in mathematics of finance. Entry to this unit is subject to a minimum UAI of 60.00 for 2005 HSC students. There are no other prerequisites. This unit is often studied on a non-award basis by students who are hoping to subsequently gain entry to an accounting or finance degree.
- Students who have completed an actuarial degree but who didn't obtain exemptions from all the Part I subjects of the professional exams may attempt to complete the remaining subjects by non-award study at Macquarie University. Students who have completed some of these Part I subjects by the U.K. correspondence courses may also attempt this.
- The units ACST831 and ACST832 form Part II of the professional exams. Students attempting the part II subjects on a non-award basis should enrol in these postgraduate units rather than the 4th year undergraduate versions of these units.

Deadlines for Applications and Fee Information in available on the Non-Award Study site.
HECS charges do not apply to non-award study. Instead you are charged per credit point. Currently ACST101 is a 3 credit point unit, and ACST831 and ACST832 are each 4 credit point units.
You can enrol in both first and second semester units on the one application form at the beginning of the year, in which case only one application fee applies. For example, many students enrol in both ACST831 (1st semester) and ACST832 (2nd semester).
The application fee will be waived for alumni of Macquarie University, provided you request it at the time of application and include the required documentary evidence. Refer to the Centre for Open Education for more information.
