Department of Actuarial Studies

Future Students

Welcome to the Department of Actuarial Studies. Macquarie's actuarial studies program was the first actuarial studies program in the English speaking world to be accredited by a professional actuarial body and is the longest running program in Australia.

Firstly it may be useful to read the document What does an actuary do?

Then, investigate the our website to learn more...

Useful School Subjects

Students planning to pursue an actuarial degree should study the highest level of mathematics available to them at high school.

Courses in computing, economics, accounting or business studies are also useful. The actuarial course at Macquarie University does not assume any previous knowledge in these areas, but students who have studied these subjects at high school will have a head start on the corresponding university units.

While no particular level of English studies is required for entry to the course, you should note that competency in written English is an essential skill for university studies.

Comments for NSW HSC students

Students sitting the New South Wales Higher School Certificate should ideally study Mathematics with both extension units. If Extension 2 is not available at your school, Mathematics with Extension 1 will suffice.

Other units which will also prove useful are

  • Economics,
  • Information Processes and Technology, and
  • Software Design and Development.
