Some Macquarie Actuarial Graduates
This page shows the variety of work in which some of our recent actuarial graduates are involved.
Macquarie's actuarial studies graduates include amongst their number a Rhodes Scholar, several who have undertaken postgraduate studies in prestigious overseas universities such as Stanford and Harvard, a winner of the Business Review Weekly Business Student of the Year Award, and past Presidents of The Institute of Actuaries of Australia.
Macquarie Actuarial Studies graduates can be found working in New Zealand, Europe, North America and Asia. The strong numbers of graduates in Kuala Lumpur, Singapore and Hong Kong are particularly noteworthy.

Adam Driussi (Graduated 1995) is a Director of The Quantium Group, a consultancy specialising in marketing and customer analytics. Adam provides strategic advice to many of Australia's leading brands in industries such as banking, telecommunications, media and insurance. This advice covers a wide range of strategic issues including customer and product pricing, customer value measurement, customer retention and media optimisation. Prior to co-founding Quantium, Adam was a Partner at Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu, where he led the firm's pricing and customer analytics practice.

Andrew Ang (Graduated 1994) is an Associate Professor of Finance at Columbia Business School in New York City. After winning the University medal for his actuarial Honours thesis and working in industry for a short time, he attended Stanford University earning a Masters degree in Statistics and a Ph.D. in Finance. His research expertise includes empirical asset pricing, asset allocation, and dynamic valuation techniques. Andrew credits the flexibility of Macquarie's actuarial program for exposing him to many areas of financial economics and econometrics.

Aruna Pavithran (Graduated 1995) is Managing Director of Lucis, a boutique strategy and supply chain consulting company. She also provides independent private equity and risk advisory services in the energy sector for corporations and government. Prior to this, Aruna had a global service line role with Accenture, leading strategic assessment teams throughout Asia, in the UK and the US. Her actuarial undergraduate degree proved to be a significant differentiator at graduate level, and continues to add distinction to her commercial skills and activities.

| Esther Kahumburu (Graduated 2001) works in Kenya for Jubilee Holdings Ltd. She heads the actuarial department and her work covers life insurance administration from inception to claim validation and payment, product innovation and development in general insurance, company-wide quality management, pensions and medical insurance. Esther is involved in setting up The Actuarial Society of Kenya (TASK), which will have the objectives of raising the profile of the profession and developing education systems to enhance local actuarial expertise. Esther believes that the broad nature of the Macquarie program has given her a good understanding of all areas of her company's business, and that the skills and knowledge she acquired in the Actuarial Control Cycle have been invaluable. |

Hoa Bui (Graduated 1984) is a director of KPMG Actuaries, an independent actuarial consulting firm. Hoa provides actuarial advice to a number of institutions, including life insurers, fund managers and investment banks and is the Appointed Actuary for PrefSure Life. Prior to joining KPMG Actuaries, Hoa was in a number of senior actuarial roles in AC&L, AXA and Tower in product development and financial reporting. |

Marc Pillemer (Graduated 1999) is currently working for the investment banking and securities firm Goldman Sachs in New York. After graduation, Marc spent 2 years with Goldman in Hong Kong working in Debt Capital Markets in the bank's Fixed Income Division. After moving to New York and spending 18 months in the Interest Rate Derivatives Structuring and Marketing Group, Marc now works in the Financial Institutions Group in the Investment Banking Division, with a primary focus on Insurance. Marc plans to remain overseas to gain further overseas experience, before returning home to Sydney later in his career.

Melinda Howes (Graduated 1989) worked for life insurance company Prudential for 4 years in life insurance and superannuation, then spent 11 years at BT Financial Group where she was head of superannuation technical, head of education, managed a corporate super sales team and was most recently Director of Superannuation and Retirement Products. In 2005 she joined Alea Actuarial Consulting Pty Ltd, a small superannuation consulting firm. The Macquarie course provided a valuable grounding in investment and superannuation.

Sarosh Batliwalla (Graduated 1990 ) has since 1995 worked for the Commonwealth Bank in several positions with responsibilities in management and finance. At present he is Executive, Structured Finance, Global Finance Solutions, with a focus on real estate. He has also served in the Bank Project and Infrastructure Finance team and as the Valuation and Financial Reporting actuary in the CBA’s life insurance and funds management business. Sarosh renewed his involvement with Macquarie University in 2000 when he was elected to the University Council.

Tony Coleman BA (Macq) MBA (Macq) FIA FIAA is the Chief Risk Officer and Group Actuary of Insurance Australia Group (IAG), the largest general insurer in Australia and New Zealand. Prior to joining IAG in December 2000 he was a senior corporate finance partner of PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC). Throughout his career, Tony has played an active role in the actuarial profession. He was President of the Institute of Actuaries of Australia (IAAust) in 2001 and received the prestigious “Actuary of the Year” award of IAAust in 2004. Internationally he is the Australian representative on the International Accounting Standards Board Insurance Working Group and a member of the United Nations Environmental Program Climate Change Working Group, reflecting his long standing interest in promoting a better understanding of this issue in the community. Tony was awarded the Allen Knott memorial reward upon completion of his MBA at Macquarie in 1980. Tony swims regularly, sails competitively on Sydney Harbour most weekends and still loves to go snow ski-ing when he can find the time. |

Wendy Fu (Graduated 2003) is an Associate in Tillinghast Towers Perrin financial services and insurance consulting practice in Hong Kong. She has worked with many different clients since she joined Tillinghast, and travelled extensively throughout the Asia-Pacific area, including Singapore, Taiwan, China, Malaysia, Thailand and Australia. Her responsibilities include assessing the economic value of life insurance companies for M&A deals, conducting asset and liability modelling, financial reporting, and independent model reviews. She believes the Macquarie Actuarial Studies Program has provided an excellent and solid technical foundation to the students, giving them a head-start to a bright future in their career.

Wade Tubman (Graduated 1991)is an actuary at PricewaterhouseCoopers Australia, a leading actuarial consultancy. Wade joined PwC in 2004 after working with both Tillinghast Software Solutions and Tillinghast – Towers Perrin, where he was involved in the development and implementation of financial models. This included models for the Australian life insurance market, and during a 4 year period overseas, Asset and Stochastic ALM models for the US and Europe. PwC Australia has provided a variety of challenges, including traditional actuarial roles, risk and capital projects, acquisitions and unit. |
