Department of Actuarial Studies

Undergraduate student studying Economic and Financial Studies at Macquarie University, Sydney Australia

About Us

The Department of Actuarial Studies has been successfully delivering quality actuarial programs for over 30 years and has supplied the profession with over 1,000 graduates in that time.

Quality

The quality of the Department's courses has resulted in the Institute of Actuaries of Australia choosing Macquarie University as a Centre of Excellence.

Accreditation

Macquarie University was the first university in the world to have its actuarial courses recognised as being of equivalent standard to the corresponding subjects of the (U.K.) Institute of Actuaries. As a result of this, Macquarie students with sufficient grades were granted exemption from the corresponding U.K. exams. The Macquarie program has since been emulated by other universities in the United Kingdom, South Africa and Singapore.

Our Students

Applying mathematical, statistical, economic and financial analysis to a wide range of risk management and business problems and opportunities, our actuarial graduates find well-paid careers in all major areas of actuarial work, including superannuation, finance, life insurance, general insurance and investment across a huge range of industries.

Our Staff

Macquarie University has many experienced actuarial teaching staff, most of whom are fully qualified actuaries. Between them, the teaching staff have practical experience in all major areas of actuarial work, including superannuation, finance, life insurance, general insurance and investment. Two of the actuarial studies lecturers have won Macquarie University Outstanding Teacher Awards. Actuaries from industry are also invited to give guest lectures to students.

Flexibility

Macquarie University offers students a range of choices within structured programs of accredited study with actuarial skills as a foundation. Double degree programs allow students to combine their actuarial studies program with a degree in law, applied finance, statistics, mathematics, economics, econometrics, computing or accounting.

Full-time study

At Macquarie University, you can enrol in a full-time actuarial degree and attend classes with a full range of lectures and tutorials.

This provides a more supportive environment and a faster way to become an actuary than the alternative route of obtaining an undergraduate degree in financial studies, statistics or perhaps mathematics, obtaining employment in the financial services industry and then commencing your actuarial qualifications by spending your evenings studying correspondence courses from (U.K.) Institute of Actuaries. In a Macquarie actuarial degree you will begin studying actuarial units in your very first semester at university.
